Mackinac Island: A Place Where History and Luxury Blend

Have you ever yearned for life to slow down? You dream of the smells of summer, and maybe, a time before automobiles where you hear the clip clop of horse hooves instead of car horns. Welcome to Mackinac Island, a charming c

ar-free haven in Lake Huron.

At the heart of it all sits the Grand Hotel, an opulent retreat that has been pampering guests since 1887. It has an impressive 660-foot porch where you sip a cool cocktail and view the   sun dip behind the Straits of Mackinac. Inside, the chandeliers sparkle over lavishly decorated rooms, each uniquely designed with bold colors and Victorian flair. For history buffs, you ‘ll love knowing that five U.S. presidents and countless celebrities stayed here. (Some celebrities such as Ron Howard, Vince Vaughn and Bob Seger live on the island.) For our food lovers, the five-course dinner in the main dining room, with its live music and dress code, is necessary.

Beyond the elegance of the hotel, Mackinac Island is a place for adventure. Rent a bike or take a leisurely carriage ride to explore the 8.2-mile perimeter of the island. You see the dramatic limestone bluffs and the hidden coves with stunning views. Wanting a quieter experience? Venture inland to Tranquil Bluff Trail, a scenic route through dense forests with breathtaking overlooks. It can certainly be a writer’s paradise!

Looking for an utterly unique experience??  Visit Skull Cave, a small but eerie site once used as an Indigenous burial place. Or wander into Harrisonville, the island’s lesser-known neighborhood, where locals live in historic cottages away from the bustling downtown.

Saving the best for last, visit Murdick’s or Ryba’s to watch the Mackinac Island fudge (an island tradition) being made on marble slabs. Make sure you sample a piece, then take a box or two of this sweet treat home to share or… not. There are no regrets or calories when on an adventure.

Whether you come for the grandeur of the Grand Hotel, the rich history of the island or the quiet beauty of the hidden trails, Mackinac Island is a place that lives in your memory long after you return home.
