Looking for a destination that has beauty, romance, and a bit of luxury? Look no further than to the unique destination of Portofino, Italy. It has everything that you would expect from a destination on the Italian Riviera.
Located on the Ligurian Sea, and about an hour’s drive from Genoa, Italy, Portofino is like stepping into a picturesque postcard lined with the cobblestoned streets, proudly showing off their enchanting pastel-colored houses. Like all of Italy, it has a rich Roman history beginning with its original name derived from the Latin “Porus Delphini” that translates to Port of the Dolphin. The village, best known for its draw of the rich and famous of the world, lures visitors with amenities such as luxurious hotels with wonderful, terraced views of the Bay, and high-end shopping venues.
One of the many activities that I indulge in is people watching, and what not a better place to do this but from the Piazzetta, Portofino’s bustling central square. Take a seat at one of the many beautiful, flowery cafés and have a glass of wine or an espresso. Do not forget, you are in Italy so take the opportunity to savor some of the delicious local fare while watching the artists paint the scene.
Not so much into watching but seeking an adventure? How about a hike to the Castello Brown? There is much trodden path that will offer you a breathtaking, panoramic view of the bay and the sea. For those who would rather stroll and take in the sights, do not miss the opportunity to explore the beautiful coastal walkways along the path to the village of Santa Margherita Ligure. You will see the stunning turquoise water and the dramatic cliffs.
Looking for something a bit slower and even more leisurely? Take the boat trip to The San Fruttuoso Abbey. It is very secluded (accessible by boat or a strenuous hike.) While there, take the opportunity to swim in the clear waters in the shadow of its ancient tower, or take a few selfies, and have a picnic lunch. What a way to spend the day! Heavenly!
If shopping is your fancy on this visit, Portofino does not disappoint. While there are high-end shopping venues, there are many village shops that invite visitors to come in, chat, browse, touch, and feel the goods. It has that little village feeling and you will feel the warm hospitality of the locals.
Nighttime in Portofino is magical. Twinkling lights across the harbor and the al fresco dining give you the opportunity to sit, to listen, and to enjoy the heartbeat of this hidden gem. Portofino is serene and you experience life at its best with the waves telling you to relax, relax, slow down, and appreciate the moments. What is better than this?
